2012 Vermont Maple Open House Weekend

March 24-25, 2012
Sugarhouses throughout Vermont will be hosting the Eleventh Annual Vermont Maple Open House Weekend. The Open House Weekend is a public celebration of Vermont's maple syrup season and it will be your chance to visit one or more "sugarhouses" throughout the state. Activities will differ at each sugarhouse. It's your opportunity to watch maple syrup being made (weather permitting) and sample maple products. It's a SWEET event.

Do you know December 17th is National Maple Syrup Day? Here's a few tips on how you can celebrate the day.

  1. Start the celebration with a breakfast that goes well with pure maple syrup – pancakes, waffles, french toast, and crepes. If you're not crazy about cooking, go to your locally owned pancake house ... don't forget to take your pure Vermont Maple Syrup with you.

  2. Change the recipe of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich by replacing the jelly with maple syrup or maple cream.

  3. The dinner menu could include a glaze for ham, a side dipping sauce for sushi, and a topping for vegetables. Use maple syrup as the sweetener in your favorite recipe for muffins, baked beans or barbecue sauce. If you're replacing crystalline sugar, reduce the other liquid a bit.

  4. Pure maple syrup adds an explosion of flavor to any dessert. Top ice cream with maple syrup; make a layer of syrup in cakes instead of frosting; and try dipping Twinkies or other light cakes in maple syrup.

  5. If you have snow on the ground or access to crushed ice, Sugar on Snow is a Vermont tradition. During maple season, Sugar on Snow parties are held throughout Vermont. And at the end of the first day's boil, it's not unusual to celebrate with sugar on snow. Get the recipe.
